Understanding how family life shaped the Roman state and law
This book examines how the family, kinship, and guardianship formed the base of Roman social and political life, from patria potestas to patronage and client relations. It explains how these private structures influenced public institutions, rights, and duties in early Rome.
- See how the family and gens governed relations, property, and succession in a developing city-state.
- Learn how patria potestas, manus, and guardianship affected women, children, and inheritance within Roman law.
- Understand the role of patrons, clients, and the evolving patronage system in shaping political power.
- Explore how the early Senate, comitia, and legal reforms interacted with family structures and social classes.
Ideal for readers of classical history and someone seeking a clear view of how private life formed Rome’s public institutions.
