Vo DEC 19 1316 SP6 PREFACE TO SECOND EDITION The First Edition of this book has been used by the author for the last foiu? years as a text-book in large classes containing many mature students. Such errors and obscurities as have been discovered during that period have been eliminated in this edition. Additional chapters upon Swing Bridges, the Theorem of Least Work, Earth Pressure, Masonry Dams and Masonry A rches, have been inserted. A few new problems for solution have also been added. The author wishes to express his appreciation of the valuable assistance and suggestions he has received from some of the past and present members of the Civil Engineering Instructing Staff at Technology, and from certun graduate students.
