Readers of this essay are invited to think a little about thinking. Psychologists have not yet been able to tell us what thinking is. But most knowledge is knowledge of the undefined as knowledge of Jove, for example, or knowledge of life jand as for thinking, though we can not define it, we know enough about it to know that there are many kinds. I wish to notice some of them, some of their similitudes and differences, the roles they play, the services they render, the various ranges of their significance.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating realm of thinking, exploring its various forms and their profound impact on human life. The author distinguishes between two primary types of thinking: empirical thinking, rooted in observation and experience, and autonomous thinking, characterized by its logical structure and reliance on postulates. While empirical thinking has long dominated human history, shaping fields like agriculture, navigation, and ethics, the author highlights the emergence of autonomous thinking as a revolutionary force in science and philosophy. The author traces the evolution of this method from its early manifestations in Euclid's Elements to its application in non-Euclidean geometries and modern physics. The book emphasizes the importance of autonomous thinking as a tool for constructing and critiquing scientific doctrines, offering a model for clear and coherent reasoning across diverse fields. The author argues that autonomous thinking can enhance and guide empirical inquiry, leading to new discoveries and a deeper understanding of the world. Ultimately, this book illuminates the transformative power of autonomous thinking, demonstrating its ability to elevate human knowledge from the realm of the anecdotal to the realm of the demonstrably true. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
