Contrary to public impression, Kentucky does not mean dark and bloody ground, but it is a word originally used by the Iroquois Indians to signify the hunting grounds; or, a much better word, meadowland. This in justification of my title. Lore of theM eadowland may be considered as sort of a sequel to my Kentuckians inH istory and Literature, a book, I trust, that is not as bad as its name. At any rate, it found favor with quite a number of readers, and its companion is now sent forth with the hope (as all first-book authors have it) that it, too, may prove worth while, and finally find an humble place in the great world of books. J. W. T. Lexington, Ky., February 25, 1911.
