Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book investigates how severe, ongoing muscular exertion affects nitrogen waste in the human body as measured by urea excretion. At the time of its writing, the prevailing view in physiology was that muscular exertion led to increased urea excretion. To test this theory, the author observed a celebrated pedestrian who walked 100 miles in 21 hours and 39 minutes, and analyzed his food and urine over the course of 15 days, including five days before, during and after the walk. The results supported the theory that urea excretion increases with strenuous physical exercise. This finding challenged existing scientific views and encouraged a reevaluation of the sources of muscular power and the significance of nitrogen waste in the body. By expanding our understanding of the interrelationship between muscular exertion and nitrogen waste, this book advanced the scientific dialogue on muscular physiology.
