It has been my aim in this work to give a simple statement of the various schools of philosophy, vrith the salient features of their teachings, and to indicate the chief points at issue in reference to controverted questions. There has been no attempt to present a detailed account or exhaustive criticism of philosophical systems; but merely to furnish the student who is beginning the study of philosophy a birds-eye view of the general philosophical territory. It is my earnest hope that from these cursory glimpses he may be led to a more extended and serious exploration.
