Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book offers a detailed report on the progress of the second geological survey of Pennsylvania, conducted by the author in the oil district of Venango County in 1874. The focus of the survey was the study of oil-bearing strata and the identification of the three main oil sands found in the area: First, Second, and Third Sands, along with their sub-divisions. The report presents a classification of these sands and discusses their trend, elevation, and the general geology of the region, as compared to that of northwestern Ohio and southwestern New York, which shared similar formations such as the Devonian Age Old Red Sandstone. Additional topics include observations made around Warren by Mr. Randall and the possible connections between Fagundus Oil Sand and the Second Mountain Sand. The author concludes that precise and accurate geological work of this nature would be beneficial for the understanding of the oil-bearing strata, even though the field was, at the time of writing, relatively new.
