Illusions are more common than you think—and they shape how we see, think, and believe. This classic study explains why our ordinary judgments can be misleading, even when we feel sure of ourselves.
The book examines how illusion arises in everyday life, not just in the lab. It covers how perception, memory, introspection, and belief can tilt toward error. You’ll see why common sense sometimes clashes with psychological evidence, and how mood, suggestion, and prior experience influence our judgments.
Within its thoughtful framework, you’ll explore topics such as:
Ideal for curious readers of psychology and philosophy, this edition helps you understand the roots of error in everyday thought and offers a disciplined way to examine your own beliefs.
Ideal for readers of psychology, philosophy, and self‑awareness.

The present volume takes a wide surrey of the field of error, embracing in its view not only the illuB iooa of sense dealt with in treatises on physiological optics, etc., but also other errors familiarly known as illusions, and resembling the former in their structure and mode of origin. I have throughout endeavoured to keep to a strictly scientific treatment, that is to say, the description and classification of acknowledged errors, and the explanation of these by a reference to their psychical and physical conditions. At the same time, I was not able, at the close of my exposition, to avoid pointing out how the psychology leads on to the philosophy of the subject. Some of the chapters were first roughly sketched out in articles published in magazines and reviews; but these have been not only greatly enlarged, but, to a considerable extent, rewritten. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive analysis of illusions and hallucinations, arguing they are not separate but exist on a continuum. It views these errors of perception through the lens of established medical practices and theories but also delves into philosophy and psychology. The author argues that the most common errors of perception are those that replicate our normal modes of receiving information, even going so far as to suggest that hallucinations and delusions may be the extreme ends of a spectrum of errors that everyone experiences. By offering a wide-ranging analysis of illusion, this book will appeal to anyone interested in psychology and the nature of perception, as well as those studying the medical conditions that cause abnormal perception. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
