The papers and essays in this book were written from time to time during the past twenty-five years, for the purpose of treating some of the urgent questions growing out of the newly awakened interest in physical education in A merica. Some of the papers were originally delivered as addresses before various educational and medical associations, and some have been printed as magazine articles. The others appear here for the first time. Although the papers were not intended to be historical, they do, nevertheless, chronicle the earlier physical condition of the American people and the existing necessity ioi some form of physical training, as well as record the many difH culties which have had to be overcome during the past quarter of a century in the efforts to make physical education a part of the school and CQ lege curriculum. in addition to the historical character of the book, certain chapters contain the principles and thfpories which the author has employed in evolving lT he author desires to thank D.
