Bridges will be designated by reference to class and type; thus a city highway arch of 60 ft. span and carrjdng Electric Railway tracks, will be designated as Class E-4. II. LOADS. 4. Class AB ridges will be designed, unless otherwise specified, for Coopers E60 loading (S ee Appendix D) and will be used for all railroads carrying heavy trafl c, hauled by locomotive power. 5. Glass BB ridges will be designed, unless other. wise specified, for Coopers E40 loading (S ee Appendix D) and will be used for railroads carrying light trafl c, hauled by locomotive power. 6. Class CB ridges will be designed, unless otherwise specified, for two 100 ton (200,000 lbs.) cars entrain, wheel base 6feet, 22 feet cto cof trucks, (S ee Appendix D) and will be used for Electric Railwajs carrying very heavj traffic. 7. Class DB ridges will be designed, unless otherwise specified, for two 50 ton (100,000 lbs) cars entrain, wheel base 6feet, 22 feet cto ctrucks, (S ee Appendix D) and will be used for Electric Railway bridges carrying light trafl c. 8. Class EB ridges will be designed for (a) a concentrated live load of twenty-four tons (48,000 lbs) on two axles, ten (10) foot centers and five (5) foot gauge, iassumed to occupy a width of (10) feet; and (b) a uniformly distributed load of one hundred and twentyfive (125) lbs. per square foot on all roadways and foot walks. The Street Railway tracks will be assumed to carry the loads specified for Class DB ridges. 9. Class PB ridges will be designed to carry the concentrated and uniformly distributed live loads as given for Class

Preface The first edition of these specifications was published in 1908 and the second in 1910. In order to bring this edition up to date, it has been found necessary to make some radical changes in the requirements, particularly in the section devoted to the Quality of Materials. The sections onS urface Finish and Waterproofing have been completely rewritten. It is in the branches of the A rt, covered by these three sections, that the greatest advancement has been made in the past six years. The two previous editions have been widely used by designing engineers for railroads, cities and counties, and as a standard basis for the preparation and comparison of competitive designs. It is hoped that the present edition will be found to be even more valuable for these purposes. The value of concrete and reinforced concrete as a material of construction has been firmly established during the past decade, as has also the necessity for careful design, selection of materials and execution. Practically all of the troubles and failures which have occurred could have been avoided by the careful observance of specifications such as are given herein. Cleveland, Ohio, January, 1916. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book sets out detailed specifications for the design and construction of concrete bridges. The author presents a wealth of information and guidelines based on years of personal experience, as well as the suggestions of other engineers and the results of engineering experiments and research. The text includes not only the rules and regulations governing bridge construction, but also offers the author's insights on how and where to modify or adjust these rules to best suit the particular conditions of a given project. The inclusion of data for designing steel reinforcement in beams adds to the practicality of the information provided. An important tool for both students and experienced engineers, these specifications stand out as representative of the state of civil engineering practice in the early twentieth century.
