Dr. William Jones in 1903. It is possible that some of them were collected during his visit at the Carlisle Indian School in February; but it is clear that some were collected from James Down, aK ickapoo lad from that school, inN ew York in May and June.1 A letter, dated A pril i5th 1913, from Superintendent Friedman to me gives the name of the Kickapoo lad, though he states the records do not show for what purpose the latter was inN ew York. A slip of paper inside one of the note books containing the Kickapoo tales gives a list of the Kickapoo andS auk andF ox (of Oklahoma: hence presumably really Sauk) children at the school whenD r. Jones visited the institution. This fact coupled with the passages in Rideout slife, makes it not quite certain where the material was gathered. It may be noted that the Kickapoo here presented is of the so-called Mexican band.
