To that end, the author proposes a limited labor day coupled with protectionist policies designed to exclude both cheap foreign labor and products. In elucidating this thesis, the author first defines justice as a state wherein the burdens and benefits of society are equally shared. In the present day, the author continues, the working class is burdened with excessive work and insufficient reward while the inverse is true among the leisure and employing classes. The author traces this disparity to the existence of a surplus of labor that enables employers to both lower wages and extend working hours. The proposed remedies of a shortened labor day and protectionist policies, the author argues, would eliminate this surplus and thereby restore justice to the economic system. The author concludes by emphasizing that the working class cannot afford to wait any longer for redress and must organize itself to demand these changes.
