Transform the way you understand electric power with clear, practical guidance on transformers. This edition explains how a magnetic circuit links primary and secondary coils to transfer power, reduce voltage, and serve near-consumer needs. It blends theory with hands‑on testing and design methods for engineers and curious readers.
The book builds from fundamental principles to real-world applications, showing how induction, regulation, and efficiency fit together. It covers how to measure core loss, copper loss, and how to assess transformer performance under different loads and frequencies. Practical tests, design approaches, and case examples help you connect theory to practice.

The following pages originated from a course of University lectures. It is hoped that the book will be of use to the engineer and general reader. Some knowledge of elementary alternating currents is presupposed. 1have found that the student who grasps the theory of the transformer has little difficulty with the more complicated actions and reactions taking place in the induction motor, and is also helped in his study of synchronous apparatus. Chapters I and II are merely introductory. Chapters III to V, carefully studied, should give the reader a thorough knowledge of the transformer. The tests inC hapter VI should be carried out by the student on a few commercial types. The method of design inC hapter VII is offered as a probable improvement over that usually given in text books. I wish to thank the manufacturers for the loan of cuts used inC hapter X. Thanks are also due the nublishers who have maintained their reputation for sparing no effort or expense to make the book mechanically as perfect as possible. I am indebted toM r. A. S. Kalenborn for reading proofs. F. G. Baum. Stanford Univ., Cal.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a straightforward and comprehensive account of the alternating current transformer, a device that transfers power through space without relative motion between the two coils. The author begins by reviewing the fundamental principles of the magnetic circuit and the laws of magnetic induction. He next takes up the effects of the current in one coil upon the other, and develops equations that describe the secondary e.m.f. induced and the counter e.m.f. on the primary. The graphical representation of pressure relations is then discussed, and the author shows how to determine the regulation of transformers for any load and for any power factor. The final chapter deals with the efficiency of transformers, and the author provides a method for calculating the all-day efficiency of a transformer operating on a variable load. This book is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand the operation of transformers, and it is also a useful reference for electrical engineers. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
