Excerpt from Essays on the Study and Use of Poetry
The recent very general interest in poetics has led me to prepare these translations of the essays on poetry by Plu tarch and Basil the Great, in the hope that they may prove useful to students of literature. Although they were not epoch-making, these essays are worthy of consideration, for, besides their intrinsic value, they mark interesting stages in the history of poetic criticism.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of ancient Greek literature through the lens of two prominent figures: Plutarch and Basil the Great. The author provides a nuanced examination of their views on poetry and its role in society, placing their theories within the broader context of Greek intellectual history. You'll encounter an exploration of the distinction between poetry and prose, the relationship between poetry and truth, and the ultimate purpose of art. The author reveals how Plutarch, while valuing philosophy as the highest pursuit, ultimately saw poetry as a valuable tool for introducing young minds to the deeper truths of life, akin to a gateway to philosophy itself. By analyzing Plutarch's and Basil's writings, the author unveils a complex and insightful perspective on the enduring power of classical literature to shape both minds and societies.
