Synopsis

This book explores the spiritual teachings of the Old Testament and their profound significance for Christian revelation. It examines how the Old Testament evolved from early Babylonian mythology to the refined religious philosophy of the Hebrew people. The author argues that despite the apparent differences between the Old and New Testaments, the Old Testament scriptures still possess enduring value for Christianity. Through careful examination of key Old Testament narratives and their literary forms, this book reveals their theological insights and enduring relevance. It demonstrates the progression of religious revelation as God communicated with humanity in stages throughout history, gradually deepening their understanding of God's purpose. The author draws connections between Old Testament concepts and New Testament teachings, showing how the former foreshadowed and prepared the way for the latter. This insightful exploration highlights the vital role of the Old Testament in understanding the Christian faith and its enduring message of God's love and plan for humanity.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Old Testament, and the bringing of that teaching into its true relation to the Christian revelation as contained in theN ew Testament. Modern critical and scientific study is believed by many to have discredited the religious value of theO ld Testament. Numbers of people who have but a vague and hearsay knowledge of the Higher Criticism think that its aim or, at any rate, its result has been to pull down and destroy rather than to build up. Even the Christian preacher, if, as too often is the case, he is untrained and unversed in modern Old Testament study, is apt to regard theO ld Testament as an incubus rather than as a help to his teaching. He avoids it in his sermons; he is perplexed as to the sense in which divine inspiration can be claimed for it; sometimes he frankly confesses his desire to lay it aside altogether, and to start from theN ew Testament.
