While you stick to the old Church of England ways you are respect able it is going by a sort of tradition ;when you profess to return to lost Church of England ways you are rational; but when you invent a new ceremonial which never was, when you copy the Roman or other foreign rituals, you are neither respectable nor rational. It is sectarian. J. H. Newman to Henry Wilberforce. Life of J. H. Cardinal Newman, by W. Ward. 1912. I. 235. A fAHE English Use is a convenient title to express -what is aimed at by those who desire loyally to follow the directions given or implied by our Church in the Prayer Book in respect of Church Ornaments and Cere monial. It will scarcely be denied that the Church of England has a right to a ceremonial law of its own, and beyond question the Prayer Book contains at least a certain number of explicit directions. The upholders ofT he English Use, then, desire to take for their guiding principle the appeal to authority, and to set aside any personal preference for this system or that, whether in whole or in part. It might have been expected that this would be accepted as a matter of course, but in practice it has not been so.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex history of liturgical practices within the Church of England. The author argues that the English Church possesses a unique ceremonial tradition rooted in the Book of Common Prayer. This tradition, known as the 'English Use', is distinct from both Roman Catholic and Reformed practices. The author traces the development of the English Use from the pre-Reformation era to the present day, examining how it has been shaped by both internal and external factors. The book explores the theological, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of the English Use, providing a comprehensive understanding of its significance within the Anglican tradition. Ultimately, this book offers a compelling case for the preservation and appreciation of the English Use, arguing that it embodies a rich and distinctive expression of Christian worship that has much to offer the contemporary Church.
