Explore how battlefield ideas from antiquity to the early Middle Ages reshaped empires, armies, and world history. This book surveys ancient tactics, famous campaigns, and the rise of professional armies, showing how numbers and strategy changed the fate of civilizations.
From Hannibal’s mastery at Cannae to Scipio’s reforms at Zama, you’ll see how leaders turned small battalions into decisive forces. The text reflects on the shift from citizen armies to professional soldiers, and how military power intertwined with politics, religion, and empire-building. It also ties these lessons to later eras, including the impact of barbarians, emperors, and the church on warfare.

Excerpt from Numbers in History
Historians of our day are supposed to study one period or the other of the history of mankind, because nobody, not even the greatest scholar, would be able to master history on the whole. But it is not sufficient to divide the researches by periods of time, because periods are not to be understood by themselves only, but must be always illustrated by the preceding and following times, and even by times very far apart, throwing their light by analogies. To profit by this kind of elucidation, we are forced to divide the work of historical research not only in breadth, but also in length.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the often overlooked but crucial role of numbers in shaping the course of military history. The author challenges traditional accounts of famous battles, arguing that popular narratives frequently exaggerate the size of opposing armies to emphasize the underdog's triumph. By meticulously examining historical records, geographical data, and the logistics of warfare, the author reveals that battles like Marathon, Plataea, and Cannae were won not through sheer numerical superiority but through superior strategy, discipline, and leadership. Spanning from antiquity to the Middle Ages, the author compares and contrasts the military tactics of diverse civilizations, including the Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Gauls. He highlights the limitations of citizen armies and the rise of professional forces, demonstrating how changes in military organization and technology influenced the outcomes of conflicts. The author also examines the economic and logistical challenges of warfare, illustrating how factors like terrain, supply lines, and access to resources played a decisive role in shaping military campaigns. This thought-provoking analysis exposes the myths and misconceptions surrounding historical battles, offering a fresh perspective on the dynamics of warfare and the factors that contribute to victory. By revealing the true numbers behind these conflicts, the author sheds light on the complex interplay of strategy, leadership, and human psychology that determines the fate of nations.
