Synopsis

Numbers shape every clash of swords and strategy.

This history explores how numbers, tactics, and leadership decide who wins on ancient and medieval battlefields.

Delbrück surveys the shift from citizen armies to professional forces, showing how the Romans built a winning system around disciplined troops and clever maneuvers. From Cannae to Zama, you’ll see how battles were decided not just by courage, but by how armies organized and used numbers in combat. The narrative also traces the rise of the Normans and their surprisingly small but decisive campaigns, revealing what small, well-led bands could achieve against larger foes.
  • See how tactical concepts like shrinking front lines and closing in flanks changed the outcome of famous battles.
  • Learn how leadership, morale, and the authority of magistrates influenced military discipline.
  • Understand why ancient armies evolved into professional forces and how that shift reshaped history.
  • Follow the thread from classical warfare to medieval exploits and the rise of new powers.
Ideal for readers of military history, strategy, and the long arc of how numbers influence the fate of empires.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Excerpt from Numbers in History

Historians of our day are supposed to study one period or the other of the history of mankind, because nobody, not even the greatest scholar, would be able to master history on the whole. But it is not sufficient to divide the researches by periods of time, because periods are not to be understood by themselves only, but must be always illustrated by the preceding and following times, and even by times very far apart, throwing their light by analogies. To profit by this kind of elucidation, we are forced to divide the work of historical research not only in breadth, but also in length.
