We should like to know how many of the majority of nine are interested in the poisonous and dilapidated dwellings in the parish. The Government, through the Privy Council, should order an independent, extensive, and careful investigation to be made by persons whom they might appoint. They should hear from Inspector Price what number of cellars are occupied in a condition contrary to the law, and to the great damage of life and health. The Building Act should be brought to bear upon the dangerous and dilapidated dwellings which exist. Blocks of houses should be examined, and a note taken of the population of each room. The extent and nature of the water supply should be learnt; also, the nature of the closet accommodation, and the manner in which the dust-contractors and street scavengers do, or rather do not do, their duty. If this inquiry were rightly carried out, we should See where the blame really rests.
