Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the evolving purpose of America's secondary schools. The author argues the traditional college preparatory focus of the curriculum fails to serve the educational needs of the majority of American high school students. The author examines the results of numerous studies and surveys to demonstrate the need for a more modern approach to high school education that prepares students with a diverse range of interests and socioeconomic backgrounds for success in life. The book opens by presenting secondary education's historical transformation from an elite privilege to a nearly universal experience that nevertheless perpetuates socioeconomic divisions. The author demonstrates how the existing system prioritizes college preparation over career training and social development, leading to high dropout rates and low graduation rates, especially among students from poorer communities. Using qualitative and quantitative data, the author argues that the narrow focus of secondary education is ill-suited for preparing students to participate in the demands of the evolving American economy and the complex social, industrial, and political conditions of modern life. The author concludes by arguing a comprehensive secondary education must encompass a broadened curriculum, a focus on skill development, and a commitment to serving all students, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds.
