It is with the hope that a compilation of information in regard to one of the worlds greatest food plants the potato will be of service to the increasing thousands of people now interested and becoming interested in practical, scientific agriculture, that this work is published. Never before in the history of the world has the production of human food received as great attention as at the present time. Population is increasing with alarming rapidity, while the supply of land on which it is possible to grow food is limited. The one solution of the problem is the production of more and better food on every acre of land on which crops are grown. The working out of this problem calls for broad, liberal education, not the least factor of which is to benefit by the experience of others. This has been made a keynote in this work, and while growers may not see fit to adopt wholly some of the methods described, it is believed that they will find the suggestions helpful. The senior author has grown a large acreage of potatoes at Mt. Sopris Farm for years, and has made a careful study of the practical side of potato growing all over the world. The discussion of problems, and the suggestions made, are from the standpoint of the practical grower. E. H. Grubb. W. S. Guilford. March,

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
