St. Eglon s Hut. It stood on the edge of a coppice which hid it from the high road and sheltered it from the north and east. The garden, sloping southwards, was a wilderness of flowers. The stocks and carnations, the myrtles and blue hydrangeas, were a wonder for size and beauty, while all around the little casement there clustered a wreath of roses, clematis, and honeysuckle, which seemed to be ever in bloom. To this cottage Lord Crehylls rode at a furious gallop, and flinging himself from his horse at the gate, he slipped the bridle round the rough post, and hurried up through the garden like a man in a frenzy of impatience. He knocked again and again, but a blank silence met him on every side.
