Excerpt from Form Problems of the Gothic
As for the rest, I believe that my book may be read and understood even without such preparation, especially since I have taken pains in the course of this new statement to reiterate in concentrated form those premises that form the basis of my reasoning.

Preface to the First Edition TN its basic views the present psychological investigation of style is a sequel to my earlier book, A bstrac tion and Empathy, which in its third edition is being brought out simultaneously by the same publisher. A ccordingly, whoever desires to orientate himself in regard to the premises that underlie the method em ployed in Form Problems of the Gothic is referred to those fundamental investigations. As for the rest, I believe that my book may be read and understood even without such preparation, especially since I have taken pains in the course of this new statement to reiterate in concentrated form those premises that form the basis of my reasoning. The illustrations, which the publisher has generously added to the book, do not claim at all to be exact scientific confirmation of what is developed in the text. They are intended, rather, to be taken primarily as harmonizing with the spirit of the text they accompany. Hence, their intangible qualities have helped to determine the selection. This is not, however, to say that the illustrations are superfluous in scientific respects: rather, I hope that after one has perused the text, one will appreciate these illustrative additions with an entirely new understanding. Just that is the real test of my thesis.

About the Publisher
Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.
Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Careful attention has been made to accurately preserve the original format of each page whilst digitally enhancing the aged text.
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book embarks on a captivating exploration of art history, moving beyond the traditional focus on artistic skill to delve into the depths of artistic will. It challenges the conventional notion of a singular, progressive art history culminating in classical ideals, instead proposing a multifaceted understanding that recognizes diverse artistic expressions across cultures and epochs. The author delves into fundamental human types ââ â primitive, classical, and oriental ââ â as lenses through which to comprehend the evolution of artistic expression. Each type embodies a distinct relationship between humanity and the external world, shaping unique artistic sensibilities and styles. By exploring these archetypes, the book sheds light on the underlying psychological and cultural forces that drive artistic creation. The book's thematic depth lies in its exploration of the interplay between human consciousness, cultural contexts, and artistic forms. It unravels the intricate connections between our perception of the world and the ways we express ourselves through art. This journey through the history of artistic will ultimately reveals profound insights into the human psyche and its creative potential. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
