Synopsis

How Gothic reformulates art, spirit, and space—and why it matters for understanding Western design

This book surveys how Gothic art emerges from a northern mood and gradually entwines with mysticism, shaping taste, form, and the sense of space. It compares Gothic intuition with classical architecture, showing how the shapes and rhythms of columns, arches, and ornament carry deeper ideas about life, duty, and perception.

From the rise of the Gothic to its late, lyric flowering, the text traces the shift from scholastic rigidity to a sensuous, personal language. It explains how architectural forms express inner feeling, and how mysticism blends the soul with the surrounding world to reframe beauty and meaning. Readers will see why the transition to Renaissance ideas mattered for European art and how these shifts echo in everything from temple orders to tracery and capitals.

  • How column forms and their organic sense convey carrying power and life

  • Differences between Doric and Ionic orders and their cultural meanings

  • How mysticism reshapes perception, turning hard lines into lyrical, natural ornament

  • The relationship between Gothic development and Renaissance ideas elsewhere in Europe

Ideal for readers of architectural history, art theory, and the philosophy of aesthetics who want a grounded, comparative view of Gothic and classical thought.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Preface to the First Edition TN its basic views the present psychological investigation of style is a sequel to my earlier book, A bstrac tion and Empathy, which in its third edition is being brought out simultaneously by the same publisher. A ccordingly, whoever desires to orientate himself in regard to the premises that underlie the method em ployed in Form Problems of the Gothic is referred to those fundamental investigations. As for the rest, I believe that my book may be read and understood even without such preparation, especially since I have taken pains in the course of this new statement to reiterate in concentrated form those premises that form the basis of my reasoning. The illustrations, which the publisher has generously added to the book, do not claim at all to be exact scientific confirmation of what is developed in the text. They are intended, rather, to be taken primarily as harmonizing with the spirit of the text they accompany. Hence, their intangible qualities have helped to determine the selection. This is not, however, to say that the illustrations are superfluous in scientific respects: rather, I hope that after one has perused the text, one will appreciate these illustrative additions with an entirely new understanding. Just that is the real test of my thesis.

Présentation de l'éditeur

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
