Excerpt from The Journal of Educational Psychology, Vol. 12: Devoted Primarily to the Scientific Study of Problems of Learning and Teaching
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between the IQ as a measure of the mental capacity of the individual and the facts of mental development. The IQ was first used as a means of expressing the relative mental ability of individuals as measured by the Binet scale. The first measure which was used with this scale was mental age. This, however, is an absolute and not a rela tive measure. The first relative measure used was the difference between the mental age and the chronological age, which may be called the mental age difference. This expresses the individual's superiority or inferiority in terms of a year's mental growth as a unit. It was soon discovered, however, that this measure, when applied to the Binet scale, would result in an apparent greater retardation or acceleration in the case of older children than in the case of younger ones. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a groundbreaking examination of the Intelligence Quotient (IQ), a concept that has significantly defined education and the way we rank individuals in society for over a century. It explores the development of the IQ, from its origins in the Binet scale and the subsequent modifications made by researchers, to its use as an indicator of intellectual ability and a predictor of future success. The author challenges the assumption that IQ is solely determined by genetics and immutable throughout life. Drawing on the latest research in cognitive development, this book argues that the IQ can be significantly altered by education and environmental factors. With this new understanding of IQ's malleability, the book calls for a radical shift in educational policy. By moving beyond the traditional emphasis on IQ as a fixed measure of intelligence, educators can create more inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students, regardless of their starting point.
