It was in 1866 that the Hon. Frederick Walpole seriously suggested to me that I should undertake the writing of the Jesuit Father's life. I had by this time begun to see clearly that it would be impossible to narrow the subject to the limits of a single biography, unless the significance of the incidents related and their bearing upon the history of the time were first explained and clearly apprehended.
