Hansen stheory of the Bevolkerungsstrom, or population current, is in sociology what the theory of the circulation of the blood is in medicine. This book owes much to him. My earlier data have been drawn largely from American conditions; the differences between them and those in Germany, which Dr. Hansen knows best, led me to my first new idea that the nearness or remoteness of the Malthusian limit is the key to these differences in conditions. This brought me to the theoretical consideration of a static condition, and the generalization of a two-class system, which covers Hansen sthree classes in a different perspective, and seems the logical extreme. This gives a long-needed division of the troublesome question as to whether the family or the individual is the unit of society. Provide recognition for both, in distinct classes necessitated by understood conditions, and the whole social organism seems simplified.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, written at the turn of the 20th century, explores the idea of a static condition for the human race by analyzing and comparing the fecund class, from which children are born, and the surplus class, comprising those who have no children. The author draws on historical and sociological data to examine the economic and moral differences between the two groups. They investigate how these differences arise and the resulting social phenomena, such as the tendency for a surplus class to emerge when population growth outstrips resources. Ultimately, the author delves into potential solutions to ensure the well-being of both classes within a static society. This book provides valuable insights into the complex relationship between population growth, resource availability, and social dynamics, offering a thought-provoking perspective on the challenges and opportunities faced by humanity as it navigates a changing world.
