The book, however, has been out of print for nearly a year owing to pressure of other matters, and the time required for investigation of new processes or modifications of old ones. It will be seen that considerable alterations and additions have been made in various sections, so as to bring the work up to date as closely as possible. The sections thus altered, aiict pthers entirely new, comprise chiefly the articles on Calibration of I nstruments, the Kjeldahl process, Boric A cid, Hydrofluoric A cid and Fluorides, A rsenic, Chromium, Copper, Cyanogen and Cyanides, I ron, Lead, Manganese, Mercury, Nickel, Phosphoric A cid, Sugar, Sulphur and its compounds, Tannin, Zinc, Oils and Fats, and Urine. -A srespects the volumetric method as applied to many organic substances, and the action of modern indicators in such work, nothing has been attempted, partly because the results hitherto obtained have not been altogether satisfactory, but mainly because this subject comes specially within the scope of my friend A. H. Allen swell-known work on Organic A nalysis, and it cannot in my opinion be left in better hands. My thanks are especially due to Mr. W. B. Giles, F.I.C., for his original article on the estimation of Hydrofluoric A cid, and for the benefit of his long practical experience in the examination of Sulphur Compounds and Phosphoric A cid.
