Synopsis

Firsthand accounts from the Great War’s opening years illuminate the realities of modern battle. This narrative compiles eyewitness reporting and official notes to bring you a vivid portrait of the clash on the Marne, through the Aisne, and into the fighting around Neuve Chapelle. Readers glimpse the tactics, daily struggles, and human moments behind historical events.

From intelligence work and reconnaissance to frontline combat, the book blends battlefield detail with broader explanations of military strategy. It shows how information, movement, and morale shaped the course of campaigns in 1914–1915, offering a clear window into the Australian, British, French, and German experiences on the Western Front.

  • On-the-ground descriptions of troop movements, river crossings, and village fighting that defined early trench warfare.

  • Explanations of how intelligence gathering and reconnaissance influenced decisions at high levels.

  • Accounts of air warfare and its impact on gathering information and directing operations.

  • Narrative scenes that capture the grit, fatigue, and resolve of soldiers in key engagements.

Ideal for readers of military history who want a ground‑level view of the war’s first major campaigns and the people who fought them.

Présentation de l'éditeur

September 6S eptember lo, 1914.) September 11, 1914. It will be remembered that the general position of our troops on Sunday, September 6, was stated to be south of the Marne, with French forces in line on our right and left. Practically there had been no change in the situation since Thursday, the 3rd, which marked the end of our Army slong retirement from the Belgian frontier through Northern France. On Friday, the 4th, it became apparent that there was an alteration in the direction of advance of almost the whole of theist German A rmy. That Army since the battle near Mons on August 23 had been playing its part in the colossal strategic endeavour to create a Sedan for the Allies by outflanking and enveloping the left of their whole line so as to encircle and drive both British and French to the south. There was now a change in its objective ;and it was observed that the German forces opposite the British were beginning to move in a south-easterly direction instead of continuing south-west on to the Capital.
