This book tells the incredible story of two young Englishmen, Hal Aylward and Noel Yorke, on an adventurous expedition through the mountains of Palestine in search of a legendary Christian monastery said to be home to a community of ageless, voiceless monks. Yorke, being an artist, is also eager to capture the beauty of the region through his sketches. The travelers are initially assisted by a group of Jehaleh Arabs, but following a brief encounter with a much larger group of hostile tribesmen, the Jehaleh abandon them to their fate. Aylward and Yorke forge ahead, accompanied by a reluctant dragoman and cook. As they press on, they encounter the Beni Azaleh, a nomadic tribe inhabiting the mountains, who welcome them with open arms. While living among them, the travelers learn of a strange legend surrounding the Monastery of St. Lot, a place said to be unreachable and inhabited by mysterious monks. The Beni Azaleh, however, deny any knowledge of such a place but admit to the presence of ancient rock inscriptions nearby. Aylward dismisses the legend as a tale, whereas Yorke remains convinced there is some truth to it. As the author explores the main themes of the book, he unravels the history and culture of the region, delving into the beliefs and practices of the various tribes while shedding light on the complex relationships between them.
