Synopsis

Discover the origins of television, from the first photo-electric cells to long-distance experiments. This engaging survey traces the pivotal experiments and devices that shaped early television, showing how scientists and engineers tested ideas, built prototypes, and debated what was possible.

This edition presents a clear view of the practical challenges and creative solutions that moved television from concept to reality. It covers key figures, the evolution of transmission and reception methods, and the surprising ways researchers tried to capture moving pictures across distances. You’ll see how simple or complex the early setups were, and how new ideas like rapid image traversal and synchronized signaling opened doors to modern TV.

- Learn how photo-electric cells and selenium formed the building blocks of early image capture.
- See the different approaches researchers tried, from mosaic screens to single-cell scanning.
- Understand the role of mirrors, cathode-ray devices, and synchronized motors in shaping television demos.
- Explore dramatic demonstrations, including transatlantic experiments and the race toward practical receivers.

Ideal for readers interested in the history of technology, wireless experimentation, and the people who helped turn vision into television.

Présentation de l'éditeur

From the first experiments of Hertz in 1888 to the present day covers a period of forty years, and during those forty years it can be said that the whole outlook of the man in the street towards science has undergone a fundamental change. We have at the present time a great public interested, and intelligently interested, in scientific subjects, and a new literature has sprung up catering for this body of people. This literature deals almost exclusively with the many branches of wireless and depends for its appeal upon the listener-in. If no other benefit has been conferred upon humanity by the development of radio communication, the introduction of this interest in science to a public which had hitherto been apathetic would in itself be no small benefit. The Shorter Catechism defines mans chief end as the glorification of God, the American Constitution more prosaically defines it as the pursuit of happiness, while in these days we might prefer to describe it as the pursuit of truth.

Leopold Classic Library is delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive collection. As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.
