Excerpt from Tolerance: Two Lectures; Addressed to the Students of Several of the Divinity Schools of the Protestant Episcopal Church
I have accepted with grateful pleasure the privilege of meeting you upon two evenings and talking to you upon Tol erance. I chose that subject because I had long vaguely thought of lecturing upon it, and also because it seemed to me as if there were no group of men to whom one could so fitly speak upon it as a gath ering of students of theology. To them more than to other men must come the puzzling problems and interesting sugges tions which the whole subject of tolerance involves.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the virtue of tolerance, tracing its historical evolution and examining its nature. The author contends that tolerance is not merely the passive allowance of dissent, but an active disposition composed of positive conviction and sympathy for those with differing views, harmoniously blended and grounded in a profound love of truth, humanity, and God. The book argues that tolerance is not incompatible with earnest belief, but rather that a strong personal faith is necessary for true tolerance to develop. The author further posits that, rather than arising from indifference, eclecticism, or organizational unity, genuine tolerance will emerge from a growing spiritual devotion that unifies humanity in their common striving towards the divine. This work offers a nuanced understanding of tolerance, emphasizing its crucial role in fostering a harmonious and just society, and provides valuable insights for fostering this virtue in ourselves and our communities.
