This explanation is necessary to prevent a confusion of dates in the mind of the reader. Mr. Gladstone has given notice, That it is the intention of Her Majesty s Government to advise the Crown to appoint a Commission to inquire into the economical question connected with our railway system :that is to say, the cost of conveyance on railways, and into the charges which are made by railway companies to the public. Without an accurate knowledge of these important facts, it would be utterly impossible for the Legislature to deal satisfactorily with our railway system :it could neither comprehend the extent of the evil it has inflicted on the country on the one hand, nor devise the necessary remedy on the other. Government having determined to begin with the beginning, there is every reason to hope that the movement now so well commenced may terminate in an equally satisfactory manner. 16th February,

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book explores the historical and economic rationale behind the 1844 Railway Regulation Act. The author explains that UK railways, constructed on a joint-stock basis, had by this time become entrenched monopolies, resulting in low investment and high fares. The government of the day, recognizing that a more competitive railway environment would serve the public better, enshrined in law the possibility of purchasing these railways in the future. The author argues that the conditions that inspired that legislation are now more prevalent than ever and that the original intention of a more competitive railway landscape involving national ownership should be revisited and actioned. The book thoroughly examines the economic benefits of such a scheme, focusing on the improvement it would bring to the lives of the general public, and the advantages to shareholders and the government.
