Synopsis

Travel the world from a Pacific ship to California orchards in vivid 19th‑century detail. This travelogue blends maritime life, market notes, and personal journeys to offer a window into long-ago exploration and commerce.

In these pages you’ll follow a long voyage aboard a Pacific Mail steamer, observe daily life at sea, and glimpse the bustling fruit markets of San Francisco in 1874. The author also shares hands‑on notes about growing, packing, and pricing a wide range of fruits, alongside reflections on distant lands and the people who traverse them. Interwoven are family history and the author’s broader adventures, creating a portrait of travel, trade, and perseverance.

- Life on board a large Pacific steamer: crew, safety drills, and captain’s leadership
- Realistic market details: how cherries, strawberries, plums, pears, and other fruits were priced
- Scenery and incidents at sea: flying fish, sea birds, sharks, and a rare “date line” crossing experience
- Personal notes and family history that frame a lifelong traveler’s story

Ideal for readers of travel narratives, 19th‑century exploration, and history told through first‑hand observation.
