Many of fhe following hints on philology have already appeared in print, in the form of occasional contributions, through a series of years, to newspapers and periodical publications, chiefly in theN ew York Evening Post. They are now, for the first time, brought together in a volume. Several books on philology, a part of them of English authorship, have, in the interim, been published in the United States; and some of them have occupied portions of the same ground as is here reviewed. But the author of this book has borrowed nothing for its pages from any source other than his own previous essays, except in those instances where he mentions the fact of borrowing, or quoting.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book brings forth a fascinating take on the evolution of language and its usage. The author presents an array of philological errors and corruptions which have crept into our vocabulary, and demonstrates how these changes reflect the broader social and cultural shifts of the time. The author argues that while some innovations have enriched our language, others have diluted its precision and nuance. This subtle interplay between language and society is examined through specific examples, tracing the origins of spurious words, misused words, and grammatical blunders. The author meticulously deconstructs these linguistic missteps, providing a deeper understanding of our language's historical development and its continuing evolution. Ultimately, this book is a passionate plea for the preservation of eloquence and linguistic accuracy, while acknowledging the inevitable ebb and flow of language over time. By delving into the fascinating world of philology, the author invites readers to become more conscious of their own language use and to appreciate the profound impact that words have on our thoughts and understanding. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
