This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. Like natural science, the author argues, this new field must be based upon observation, experiment, and analysis while embracing the full range of human experience. Instead of relying on speculative philosophy, this book investigates the mind as a living, active phenomenon and seeks to discover the laws which govern its manifestation. The author begins by distinguishing mind from vital force and nervous force, contending that while these forces are closely correlated, they are not identical. The author further argues that the facts of psychology can be derived from four primary sources: individual consciousness, mental pathology, comparative psychology, and the results of mind as seen in language, manners, beliefs, and human history. Through these sources, the author seeks to unravel the universal laws of mental activity. Then, building upon the discoveries of physiology, the author posits that all mental processes result from a combination of a few simple principles acting upon each other. By analyzing these principles, the author claims we can trace the development of our ideas, emotions, and volitions from their most primitive origins to their most complex forms. The book concludes that the mind is neither a mere embodiment of universal reason nor a product of external circumstances but is, rather, a unique entity which retains to the last its individuality, shaped but not determined by its experiences.
