November, 1905, I went to Moscow on some special business, which was to detain me six weeks, but which by a combination of circumstances extended themselves into twelve years. During this period I have travelled all over Russia and Siberia and have therefore been able to assimilate the ideas of the Russians and become fully acquainted with their country and their innermost life. It has always been a matter of interest to me in the various countries I have visited to study how the people live, as it is by this means that one is able to appreciate one's own life in the world.
