Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is a series of experiments the author conducted on various species of butterflies to better understand how temperature and other factors affect them. The experiments were performed in an effort to produce striking varietal forms, either in pattern or ground color, with the hope of consistency. The author acknowledges that most mutations or variations are of a genealogical nature and that under certain conditions these factors will be much more active, especially when subjected to abnormal temperatures and conditions. The author conducted the experiments with meticulous care and recorded the results so that others could learn from them. The author's information and experiment would be valuable to amateur and student naturalists who might be anxious to try temperature breeding with very limited knowledge and equipment. The experiments performed by the author produced some interesting and unexpected results. Most of the material at a temperature of 4° F. became completely torpid, and larvae refused to eat, while others in an advanced stage preparing for pupation, refused to continue development until returned to room temperature. The author's findings suggest that there may be other forces or factors at work, beside temperature, which are undoubtedly contributory towards producing variation.
