The author rejects the views of the time that elevated whites and denigrated blacks, synthesizing instead a balanced perspective, carefully avoiding the incendiary rhetoric that dominated much of the discourse on race. Unlike the antislavery movement, the author decried the harms done to the black community by the actions of white philanthropists and the government, who often sought to help but ended up creating situations that further entrenched immoral behavior. The author argues that such well-meaning but misguided efforts to uplift the black community are rooted in low moral expectations of the race. This book contends that holding blacks to the same moral standards as whites is essential for both races to achieve genuine progress and harmony.
