It seems necessary to say a few words to explain how tMs book was written. I am conscious ttiat it is not what it would have been had my husband lived to finish it. He meant it to be a complete history of the different parties, which for centuries in France have struggled and fought, each one in turn gaining supreme power by trampling the others under foot, and which still represent political life and feeling in France. He loved France with an ardent love. He longed to make his countrymen just to her, to make them understand her history and sympathise with her difficulties. He studied her history and her literature with ceaseless interest. Newspapers, essays, memoirs, histories were carefully read, and from them were volumes of notes taken.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book dissects the political landscape of France from the French Revolution to the establishment of the Republic. The author seeks to illuminate how deep-seated religious and social issues sowed the seeds for bloody revolution before shaping the ideological factions that continue to jockey for power in contemporary politics. The author argues that while the monarchy and the Catholic Church were once the pillars of the nation, their failures and excesses created the conditions for the Revolution. The peasantry, who had long suffered under the weight of feudal obligations, bridled at inequality and demanded a say in their governance. Inspired by Enlightenment ideals, they sought a secular state and the abolition of the Church and aristocracy, a demand that was only realized through the guillotine's reign of terror. The deeply held beliefs in equality and antipathy to aristocratic privilege that fueled the Revolution continue to shape French politics today, and are reflected in the ongoing strength of the left, the influence of the Catholic Church, and the deep divisions that fracture French society. This book provides a rich historical account of the development of French political thought through the lens of the Revolution.
