Synopsis

Two vivid stories and more from a master of quiet adventurous fiction This collection from Henry Milner Rideout blends sharp character studies with painterly landscapes. It moves between brisk, comic sketches and thoughtful, bittersweet contemplations, inviting readers to watch youths grow into their choices and to consider what makes a life feel true.

In these pages you’ll meet resourceful young dreamers, weathered guides, and old men who measure what a place really costs. The prose captures bustling towns, sunlit shores, and rugged paths with a clear, easy rhythm that lets the scenes speak for themselves. Expect humor, danger, longing, and moments of quiet insight that linger after the last page.

- Lively tableaux of youth testing limits and skill, from practical work to sly vanities.
- Vivid settings that feel close and tangible, from Mediterranean towns to country estates.
- Characters who face temptation, duty, and the pull of home in ways that feel earned.
- Moments of humor and pathos that illuminate human bonds and hard-won wisdom.

Ideal for readers who enjoy classic, character-driven tales set against evocative landscapes, where everyday choices illuminate larger truths about life and belonging.

Présentation de l'éditeur

Afternoon drowsiness, early spring warmth, covered the old stone ramparts of A igues-M ortes. Through heavy embrasures from which long-forgotten sentinels had watched Saint Louis and his Crusaders marching to their fleet, the sunshine now cast broad stripes and wedges of light over a deserted platform. In one of the brightest of these, under a turret, Jackdabos sat cross-legged, refitting a block of stone into the floor. A big brindle cur, his friend Puig sdog, lay snoring beside him. The young mans trowel made the only other sound, as it clinked on the aged stone, or scraped fresh mortar neatly into the surrounding crack. There! sighed Jackdabos, when he had made all smooth round the block.
