Excerpt from The Dialect of the English Gypsies
Little requires to be said by way of preface to the present work, unless it be in reference to its conjoint authorship. Although termed a Second Edition, and so far as one of its authors is concerned being but an extension of his previously published researches, yet it is far from being a réchauffe of a prior publication. It has received such additions to its material, and undergone such changes in its arrangement, that we think it may fairly be described, in the prevalent language of the day, as having passed through a process of evolution from a lower to a higher stage of development. The infusion into the work of fresh blood, and the contact with younger enthusiasm, have stirred a somewhat stagnating interest, and awakened a zymotic activity, which have led to combined and successful efforts to obtain further facts to fill former vacancies.
From a critical point of view, a book is apt to suffer from the confusion of style and want of unity which are the almost necessary features of literary partnership. Such considerations, however, are of little moment in connection with a scientific treatise which depends for its value, not upon manner, but upon matter.
