Explore how a lakes district sparked a lasting craft movement
In Ruskin’s Lake Country, H. D. Rawnsley reveals how Windermere, Coniston, and Keswick shaped ideas about nature, art, and making things by hand. The book traces a fatherly influence from the landscape to a living project that grew from small beginnings into a celebrated craft school.
This nonfiction study pairs vivid Lakeland scenes with practical stories of community making. It shows how local towns and cottages became workshops, where art, design, and skilled work met to benefit families and visitors alike. The narrative highlights dedication, collaboration, and the power of place to inspire sustainable craft.Les informations fournies dans la section « Synopsis » peuvent faire référence à une autre édition de ce titre.
English Lakes in 1824, when as a child of five and a half years old he journeyed in Mr. Telford scomfortable travelling coach with his mother and father and the Scotch nurse A nne from London to the north. What wine business the firm of Ruskin, Telford Domecq hoped to do at Keswick I know not, but if it was to start the son of the younger partner in his own business in life, the visit was eventful and well rewarded. For it was on this visit that the little lad, scrambling about at Friars Crag in charge of his nurse, felt the scene so appeal to him as to make him from that hour a dedicated spirit to the beauty and the wonders of Nature.
