Harmony and hardship collide in wartime duty, guiding a woman toward a dream of universal disarmament.
In this vivid memoir excerpt, a daughter of a disciplined family weighs the costs of war and the offer of mercy. She writes about nursing family efforts, the Red Cross, and the moral debates that rise when nations prepare for battle. The tone blends personal memory with sharp observations about courage, duty, and the stubborn pull of peace.
