The foreign mission boards of Great Britain and North America recently sent to India a strong commission under the chairmanship of Principal A. G. Fraser. The report of the commission, published in October 1920, under the title Village Education in I ndia, has been recognized by the highest authorities as furnishing valuable guidance not only to the missionary societies, but to all interested in the education of the villages of I ndia. Professor D. J. Fleming was a member of the commission, and in the course of its investigations he gathered personally a large amount of material relating to the work of the different schools that were visited. The present volume contains a selection from that material. While, as Professor Fleming points out, it is published on his own responsibility and not with the authority of the commission, it is an important supplement to the report, supplying a body of concrete experience which illustrates the arguments and conclusions of the commission. The schools here described are selected from among the best in I ndia. They cannof be regarded as typical of Indian educational institutions as a whole. But in describing some of the best work that is being done. Professor Fleming svolume shows what may be achieved under actual Indian conditions, and furnishes valuable guidance as to the principles and methods which have in practice proved most fruitful and rewarding. It will be cordially welcomed by those engaged in the work of education in I ndia, and by many at home who will find in it fresh evidence of the noble work that is being done for the redemption and upbuilding of human life in I ndia. Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book uncovers pioneering Indian schools that provided models for educational advancements at the start of the 20th century. The book focuses on 12 school types, six of which concentrate on vocational training in farming, textiles, family economics, carpentry, ironwork, tailoring, and related skills. These schools provided practical skills to help students break the intergenerational cycle of poverty and illiteracy that was pervasive in rural India at the time. The author visited these schools and interviewed staff and students, providing not only a rich description of their operations but also offering insights into the challenges and successes of delivering education in rural India. This volume provides historical context on the development of Indian educational policy and provides real-world examples of how vocational and literacy programs can be made relevant to rural students, ultimately improving their economic prospects and social mobility. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the contemporary debate about vocational education or in the history of Indian education.
