Excerpt from The Attic Orators From Antiphon to Isaeos
For the analyses of the orations it seemed best to adopt no uniform scale, but to make them more or less full according to the interest of the subject matter or the nature of its difficulties. In analysing the works of Isocrates, which abound in matter of literary or historical value, I have endeavoured to give the whole of the contents in a form easy of access, and, at the same time, to preserve the most characteristic features of expression. A careful analysis, whether copious or not, is necessarily to some extent a commentary, since the analyst must exhibit his view of the relation in which each part of the writer''s meaning stands to the rest.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book examines the origins and development of Attic Oratory, the sophisticated art of public speaking central to ancient Greek culture. It traces the evolution of oratory from its beginnings as a tool for political debate in the 5th century BCE to its zenith as a vehicle for literary expression in the 4th century BCE. The author analyzes the works of ten key orators, including Antiphon, Andocides, Lysias, Isocrates, Isaeus, and Demosthenes, presenting their techniques, styles, and contributions to the genre. By exploring the social, political, and intellectual context of their speeches, the book demonstrates how oratory both shaped and reflected the dynamic cultural landscape of ancient Athens. Through its examination of a pivotal period in the history of rhetoric, this book sheds light on the enduring power of oratory as a form of persuasion and artistry.
