Through an examination of archival records and political documents, the author argues that this parliamentâ"far from being representative of the broader Irish peopleâ"was primarily a body of Protestant elite loyal to the British Crown. The book traces the evolution of the Grattan Parliament, showing how its original constitutional limitationsâ"designed to maintain British dominanceâ"created a system increasingly at odds with popular will. This conflict reached a climax with the admission of Catholics to the franchise in 1793 and ultimately led to the Act of Union that dissolved the Irish Parliament in 1800.
