Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive historical review of the development of Western religious philosophy from the skeptical inquiries of Grecian philosophers to the skepticism of modern rationalism. The author posits that the advent of rationalism signaled an attempt to free humanity from the constraints of mythology but that it lacked the tools to do so unaided. The author traces the evolution of rationalist thought as it sought to establish the basis for positive knowledge with Descartes' assertion of thought as the basis for existence, through Leibnitz's spiritualization of matter, to the present day, which sees a return to mechanistic views. The author argues that while rationalism marked a significant departure from traditional thought, its inability to fully grapple with the nature and existence of the divine and its reliance on inherent contradictions ultimately led to its downfall as an independent philosophical system.
