A rcanumpunctationis revelatum by Capellus in 1624,the comparatively modern origin of the vowel-points in Hebrew writing was clearly exposed, vast advantages were expected to result from this disclosure. These anticipations, however, have not been realized. In fact, the Masoretic system was the gradual production of a long series of ages extending from about the seventh or eighth to the twelfth century of our era ;and the Masorets pointed their Scriptures, not only with great care and deliberation, but also with the most scrupulous honesty :so that the misreadings to be laid exclusively to their charge, which have been detected by Hebraists since the period of its having been found that the pointing of the sacred text is to be treated as a work of uninspired, fallible men, are neither extremely numerous nor of the very highest importance.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of the Hebrew language and its evolution, particularly focusing on the vowel-letters, also known as matres lectionis. The author argues that these vowel-letters were not originally part of the Hebrew Bible as written by its inspired authors but were added later, around the second century. The book explores the historical context of this change, suggesting that it was influenced by the Jews' encounter with Greek culture and their subsequent adoption of vowel-letters into their writing system. The author also delves into the motivations behind this alteration, proposing that it was driven by a desire to preserve the readability of the Hebrew Bible after the spoken language had declined and, more controversially, to counter the growing influence of Christianity. Through a meticulous examination of proper names, linguistic structures, and ancient versions of the Bible, the author builds a compelling case for the spurious nature of the matres lectionis. This analysis sheds light on discrepancies between different versions of the Bible and opens up new avenues for understanding the original text. Ultimately, the book's insights challenge traditional assumptions about the Hebrew Bible and offer a fresh perspective on its interpretation. By revealing the historical and cultural forces that shaped the text, the author invites readers to engage with scripture in a more informed and nuanced way.
