Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book introduces us to Pifaro, a Portuguese merchant who lives in London. The play begins as he learns that ships carrying his goods have been lost to Spanish pirates. Devastated by this news, he struggles to contain his despair in front of his three daughters, as he has hopes of using their inherited wealth as leverage to marry them off to wealthy suitors. His three daughters, Laurentia, Marina, and Matheo, are each in love with gentlemen of their own choosing, so feign sorrow upon hearing the news. They feel no immediate threat to their own romantic plans, as Pifaro still has his fortune in money lending. The author introduces three suitors: Delion (French), Alnaro (Italian), and Vandal/e (Dutch) who arrive to court Pifaro's daughters, bringing news that his ships were not lost after all. Overjoyed by this news, Pifaro invites them to stay for dinner. The suitors' varied attempts to impress the women with their languages and customs are humorously interrupted by the daughters' English suitors. Pifaro, who is unaware of his daughters' affections, is further dismayed when they refuse to speak to the foreign suitors, angering the men. The play continues with witty dialogue and misunderstandings as Pifaro tries to broker marriages between his daughters and the foreign suitors, while the English suitors try to thwart his plans. This book is a humorous exploration of cross-cultural misunderstandings and the power of love, with lively characters and quick wit.
