The compilation of this manual was forced upon the author by a daily experience of the needs of students, both communicants and non-communicants, who attended the confirmation classes in the University. For, although there are already many yery valuable books of the same kind in print, none of them was felt, after trial, to be all that was desired; and in so small a matter it seemed best to draw up an outline at least of what was wanted and to arrange the material for present use even if further experience should suggest improvements.
