Mr. Murray informs me that the thousand copies of this work, pub Hshed two months ago, are sold, and that a second edition is called for. In preparing it, I have corrected some dozen errors of the press, which had escaped my notice in the first edition. I have also made two slight changes in the text at pp. 236 and 246 to meet suggestions with which I have been favoured by the Eight Eev. Dr. Hedley, Bishop of Newport and Menevia, and for which I desire to express my sincere thanks to that very learned Prelate. I am indebted to the Rev. Charles Gore for reminding me that the account of the Hexatench given at p. 8does not find favour with the most recent exponents of the higher criticism. No doubt this is so. We are now confidently assured, by the school of which Wellhausen is the best known representative, that the Elohist Javist division must give way to the more scientific analysis into the Priestly codex and the Prophetic additions. But as I am not, personally, prepared to adopt either view, or even to express a preference for either, I have not thought it worth while to alter the page in question. In this connection the following remarks of Edgar Quinet seem not less worthy of attention now than they were when he wrote them :D epuis un demi-siecle, le texte de I Ancien Testament a ete examine de plus pres que jamais.

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book invites readers to question the validity of the Christian religion in light of the rapidly shifting ideas and values of our time. As religious belief wanes, a growing number of people find themselves drawn to secular philosophies such as Atheism or Agnosticism. The author examines the arguments presented by both sides with a specific focus on how modern science is shaping our understanding of the natural world and our place within it. The book begins with an overview of the history of religious belief and its significance for human civilization over the centuries before diving into contemporary critiques of Christianity. These include its reliance on 'poems' (sacred texts) that contain ethical teachings rather than literal truths. The author also examines the notion of a First Cause or Creator and how it conflicts with the scientific understanding of the universe. This leads the author to discuss the impact of Atheism and Agnosticism on modern morality and how secular ethics compare with those rooted in religious dogma. Despite identifying as an Agnostic, the author makes an impassioned plea for maintaining a sense of moral duty and ethical values, even in the absence of religious belief. Thus, the book grapples with one of the most profound questions of our time: can morality survive in a post-religious world?
